DUMAGUETE CITY—A day after the government announced that Bohol was cleared of Abu Sayyaf presence, the military activated a new battalion in Negros Oriental to further ensure security in the Visayas.
The 2nd Negros Island Geographical Battalion, activated Wednesday in Dumaguete City, is composed of 600 active and reserve soldiers, and members of the Citizen Armed Force Geographical Units. They will be based together with the 79th Infantry Battalion at Camp Leon Kilat in Tanjay City.
According to Maj. General Jon Aying, commander of the 3rd Infantry Division, the new battalion would help tighten security in Negros Oriental, a significant task especially as the Abu Sayyaf Group were able to enter Bohol last month.
Aying also said the battalion will help in the military's goal of making the province free of insurgency, especially in the mountain areas. They also aim to strengthen their forces in the Central Command as part of their long term plan.
Governor Roel Degamo of Negros Oriental also attended the activation.
