BALAYAN – An undercover policeman was killed while seven others were wounded in a shootout here before dawn Tuesday.
Authorities identified the fatality as SPO1 Brian De Jesus, an intelligence officer at the Balayan police station.
Chief Inspector Allan de Castro, the Balayan police chief, said De Jesus was gathering intelligence information in Barangay Sampaga, Balayan, Batangas against a group of suspects tagged in the drug trade. Headed by a certain Rodolfo Macalindong, the group was watching a concert in a basketball court at around 1 a.m.
Before De Jesus could approach the group, he was allegedly spotted by one of them and fired several shots.
De Jesus died on the spot from multiple gunshot wounds, while six civilians were hit by stray bullets.
The Balayan police pursued the suspected shooter and his companions to Barangay Caybunga, where they engaged in a minutes-long gun battle. Macalindong's associate Catrina Hernandez was wounded in the encounter.
However, Macalindong and his three cohorts evaded capture and are now the subject of a police manhunt.
Recovered from Macalindong’s house were 5 sachets suspected to contain methamphetamine hydrochloride, locally known as shabu, and spent shells of a .45-caliber pistol.
