MANILA — Widows of two slain La Union officials have won in their respective areas in the midterm elections held Monday.
In Sudipen, Mayor Wendy Joy Buquing has been elected as town mayor.
She received 7,034 votes, beating Catalina Leonen-Pizarro, who got 4,561 votes, based on partial and unofficial results from 100 percent of election returns.
Buquing's late husband Alexander was shot dead by unidentified men in October.
Buquing, who was with her husband when they were ambushed, was also wounded in the incident.
She was the town vice mayor and replaced her husband as mayor after the incident.
Meanwhile, La Union 2nd District Rep. Sandra Eriguel has been reelected congresswoman.
Eriguel led with 120,901 votes, based on partial and unofficial results from 100 percent of election returns.
Eriguel's late husband, former congressman Eufranio Eriguel, was shot dead in Barangay Capas in Agoo town in May 2018.
