MANILA- Malacañang on Friday paid tribute to former senator Tessie Aquino-Oreta, who passed away on Thursday night at 75.
Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque hailed Aquino-Oreta's "distinguished" career as a lawmaker, and condoled with her family.
"Our sincerest condolences to the family, relatives, friends, and colleagues of former Senator Maria Teresa "Tessie" Aquino-Oreta..." Roque said in a statement.
"May perpetual light shine upon the late Senator, and that her soul, through the mercy of God, rest in eternal peace," he added.
Aquino-Oreta, sister of slain democracy icon Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr. and aunt of former president Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III, passed away Thursday night for a still undisclosed cause.
She served 3 consecutive terms at the House of Representatives before getting elected as a senator of the 11th and 12th Congress.
Some of her bills that were signed into law include the Early Childhood Care and Development Act, the Solo Parent Act, the Solid Waste Management Act, the Philippine High School System Act, and the Clean Air Act, among others.
The Senate is expected to pass a resolution honoring Aquino-Oreta on Monday, in lieu of traditional necrological rites at the Senate session hall.
