MANILA — Gemma Lubigan is poised to win the mayoral race in Trece Martires, Cavite, beating Melencio de Sagun Jr. whose father was accused but cleared of orchestrating the slay of her husband.
Lubigan's late husband Alex was the Trece Martires' vice mayor when he was ambushed a day after announcing his bid for the city's top post.
Incumbent mayor Melandres de Sagun, Melencio's father, was charged with murder for the crime but had been cleared by the Justice department in February.
Based on 98.91 percent of partial, unofficial results tallied as of 2:50 p.m. Tuesday, Lubigan had garnered 27,918 of votes versus De Sagun who had only 21,197.
Lubigan is one of the women who inherited their husband's political bid, a long tradition in the Philippines' notoriously deadly politics.
