MANILA - Opposition slate Otso Diretso will wait until the last votes are canvassed, in hopes that its bets Bam Aquino and Mar Roxas could still secure a seat in the Senate, the coalition's campaign chief Sen. Francis "Kiko" Pangilinan said Tuesday.
As of 11:26 a.m., with 94.47 percent of votes counted, none from the 8-strong opposition slate made it to the top 12.
Aquino fell to 14th place with 13,703,133 votes, while former Sen. Mar Roxas was headed for a third loss in a national contest, at 16th place with 9,536,694.
"About 7 percent of votes or about 3 million votes are still to be counted in the unofficial tally. Perhaps the remaining 7 percent will still win 1 or 2 of our candidates," Pangilinan said in a statement.
"Let's wait for the results. Who knows baka may milagro," he said.
Other Otso Diretso candidates have conceded earlier to winning rivals, but also rallied for a last-minute win for Aquino or Roxas.
"It is with mixed feelings that I concede the senatorial race to those who won the vote of the people, but the battle of Bam and the battle of Mar is our battle," Moro civic leader Samira Gutoc told reporters.
"We are still praying for Bam and Mar," she said.
"We concede the elections but we do not concede our principles," former Quezon Rep. Erin Tañada said.
"Sa Otso Diretso pinaglalaban pa rin namin 'yung dalawa naming kandidato... Tuloy ang laban," he said.
The slate also questioned the number of malfunctioning SD cards from Aquino's bailiwick Tarlac, said vice president Leni Robredo's spokesperson Barry Gutierrez.
"Fourteen out of the 18 SD cards from Tarlac were reported na may malfunction. Balwarte ni Sen. Bam ang Tarlac. Bakit doon pa 'yung nagka-malfunction?" he said, noting that about 500,000 voters were affected by the glitch.
"We're not saying na may deliberate conspiracy dito na ginagawa pero may mga tanong na dapat sagutin ang Comelec," he said.
It was an uphill battle mostly because of lack of finances, Pangilinan said.
"Siguro kung may isa at kalahating buwan pa 'yung kampaniya 'yung mga kandidato namin na nasa 20 and below nasa top 12," he said.
"Pero sabi nga nila sa eleksyon, 'Finish or not finish, pass your papers,'" he said.
