MANILA - Police arrested a man on Monday for allegedly trying to bribe a barangay tanod (watchman) in exchange for voting a village council candidate in Barangay Upper Bicutan in Taguig City.
Authorities have identified the suspect as Teofilo Banares Jr., who was caught on video handing out P1,000 to Reynaldo Tumaca Sr. The video was recorded by the tanod's companion.
The police seized cash from Banares, but the suspect said he was only lending Tumaca money for him to buy cellphone load.
Philippine National Police chief, Director General Oscar Albayalde said they have already recorded 5 incidents of vote-buying in the 2018 barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan polls.
He said 33 people have been killed and 19 were wounded in separate incidents of violence across the country as Filipinos vote for their village leaders.
Albayalde has already ordered his commanders to form special task groups to solve the killings, including the ambush of a former La Union congressman and of the mayor of Daanbantayan, Cebu. --Raffy Santos, ABS-CBN News
