TAGUM, Davao Del Norte — Former House Speaker and Davao del Norte Rep. Pantaleon “Bebot” Alvarez voted on Monday morning at precinct 162 in Barangay Magugpo South here.
Clad in casual shirt, shorts and slippers, Alvarez queued along with other voters at the holding area, and waited for about 30 minutes due to limited seats at the polling precinct.
Alvarez is running against his erstwhile friend Davao del Norte governor Anthony del Rosario for 1st district representative.
“Eleksyon lang ‘to. Sa akin naman wala lang ‘yun eh. Alam mo naman ako,” Alvarez told ABS-CBN News of the rift.
While del Rosario secured the endorsement of President Duterte, Alvarez claimed he is leading in surveys and got the nod of influential religious sect Iglesia Ni Cristo.
“Ang importante sa lahat ay ‘yung mga tao, ‘yung mga boboto. Iisa lang naman ang isyu dito eh: serbisyo. Kung naramdaman ng taong bayan ang serbisyo mo, wala kang dapat ipangamba,” he said.
Alvarez is facing a graft and plunder complaint before the Office of the Ombudsman over his alleged receipt of kickbacks from government projects and use of government funds to buy vehicles, parcels of land and a resort on Samal island.
“Basura ‘yun,” he curtly stated.
Davao del Norte has a total of 301,507 registered voters who will choose leaders among 340 local candidates.
