MANILA - A Commission on Elections security personnel accidentally fired a gun inside the hall where votes were being canvassed, the poll body’s spokesperson said Monday.
Media rushed to the makeshift offices a few meters behind the canvassing area after hearing the sound around 7 p.m., but was barred by officials from entering the security office.
No one was hurt and nothing was damaged due to the accidental firing inside the Philippine International Convention Center, Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez said in a press briefing.
“We have armed guards in this facility and a few minutes ago there was a change of the shift so naglilipat sila ng firearms which means they needed to draw their weapons para malipat sa susunod na guard,” he said.
“Unfortunately, there was an accidental firing... Sa floor tumama yung bala,” he said.
The security personnel who was involved in the incident is under Comelec’s custody, the spokesperson said.
“Hindi pa ako nabri-brief, hindi ko pa alam ano ang SOP doon but protocol will be followed,” he said when asked what would happen to the security staff.
A sandbox has been installed outside the venue where change of shifts would take place, he said.
The Comelec would also review its security protocol, tighten measures and retrain its staff, he said.
