SAGUIARAN, Lanao del Sur - Fire razed the public market and 5 houses in this town late Saturday.

The blaze started when sparks from a transformer landed on the market's roof and quickly spread to its 41 stalls and the nearby residential area, said Sahara Gania, chief administrative officer of the Saguiaran Fire Station.

She said that the fire quickly spread because the structures were made of light materials.

A fire volunteer and an unidentified resident were injured after accidentally stepping on a nail.

Authorities last year flagged the 40-year-old Saguiaran Public Market as fire prone, noted Gania.

The town's fire station has yet to be issued a fire truck since it started operating in 2016. The office had to ask help from firefighters from the nearby towns of Marawi and Balo-i during Saturday's blaze, added Gania.
