CEBU CITY - Cebu City on Sunday has overtaken Quezon City as having the most number of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases in the country.
The city's health office has reported 1,571 cases, higher than Quezon City's 1,558, as of Sunday.
Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella attributed the increase in the number of cases to the mass testing being conducted in the city.
"We even brought more test kits for the Cebuano people to use," he added.
Most of the cases are asymptomatic.
Sitio Bagongbuhay in Barangay Carreta has been placed under a lockdown following 43 cases recorded over the weekend.
According to Carreta Barangay Captain Marciano Ando, the source of the infection was a couple who went to Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center where the wife gave birth.
When they came back to the community, they tested positive for COVID-19.
The local government conducted contact tracing, and most of their neighbors tested positive. This prompted the city to place the sitio on lockdown.
"Gi-swab test sila, negative ang bata. Pero ang ilang mga paryente, ni-positive," Ando said.
(They were swabbed, the baby was negative. But the relatives were positive.)
Because most houses do not qualify as home quarantine areas, those who tested positive were transferred to a nearby school identified as a barangay isolation center.
The strategic rapid mass testing in Cebu city, Mandaue City and Lapu-lapu City continues despite low turnout in the previous week.
The city is supposed to test at least 50,000 by the end of May 15. As of now, only about 10,000 had their blood extracted.
