MANILA - While candidates running for various posts are making their final attempts at reaching out to voters before they head to polls on Monday, 538 bets meanwhile are already sure winners.
Data gathered by the ABS-CBN Investigative and Research Group showed that these candidates are running unopposed for positions that can only be occupied by one winning candidate.
These unchallenged candidates need only one vote to be proclaimed as winners.
The list already includes Matthew Marcos Manotoc (NP), who is now running unopposed for Ilocos Norte governor after Rodolfo Farinas withdrew from the race.
However, positions for councilor and provincial board member were not included in the tally as there is more than one seat allocated per district and numbers vary by municipality, city, and province.
The data also showed that a third of all unopposed bets in 2019 or 197 candidates, are running under the administration party PDP-Laban. When combined with the 22 unopposed bets under Sara Duterte's Hugpong ng Pagbabago, they make up 40.6 percent of unopposed candidates.
The opposition's Liberal Party only has 12 unopposed candidates.
The provinces of Apayao, Northern Samar, Compostela Valley, Davao Occidental and Davao Oriental have candidates running unopposed for the governor and vice governor positions.
Meanwhile, 143 cities and municipalities have unchallenged bets running for mayor and vice mayor.
Voters in 12 municipalities will have no choice of candidates for four positions—governor, vice governor, mayor, and vice mayor—as they are all running unopposed.
The province of Maguindanao has the most number of unopposed bets with 27, followed by Ilocos Sur with 22, Bukidnon and Cavite with 21 each and Isabela and Negros Occidental with 19 each.
The list compiled by ABS-CBN Investigative and Research Group was obtained from Ballot Face Templates and Certified List of Candidates from the Commission on Elections.
