MANILA—A former lawyer for President Rodrigo Duterte and former First Gentleman Mike Arroyo is vying for the position of Ombudsman, which will be vacated by Conchita Carpio-Morales on May 26.
Veteran lawyer Edna Batacan has applied for the post, according to an ABS-CBN News source, and is currently completing all requirements by the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC), which will screen all candidates.
Batacan, a product of the San Beda College of Law like Duterte, has represented cases before the Ombudsman and Sandiganbayan.
She represented Duterte before the anti-graft court when he was mayor of Davao City.
She also served as legal counsel to Arroyo on the graft charges filed against him in connection with the botched ZTE national broadband network deal.
Applications for the position of Ombudsman will be received by the JBC up to May 15, 4:30 p.m.
