MANILA (UPDATE) - A low pressure area spotted off Mindanao has strengthened into a Tropical Depression and is named, Ambo, the first storm to enter the Philippines this year, the state weather bureau said Sunday.
As of 4 p.m. Sunday, PAGASA said Ambo was located 545 kilometers east of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, packing maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center, with gusts of up to 55 kph.
It is moving west northwest at 15 kph.
In the next 24 hours, Ambo is expected to bring scattered light to moderate, with isolated heavy rains during thunderstorms, over the regions of CARAGA, Davao, and SOCCSKSARGEN.
PAGASA also advised residents in the said regions to continue monitoring for updates, especially local rainfall or thunderstorm advisories and heavy rainfall warnings.
