MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte's political party Partido Demokratiko Pilipino–Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) will reevaluate its members after the midterm polls to ensure local officials rendered "service to the party," the group's president said Friday.
PDP-Laban will check if the 10,000 local candidates it fielded in the 2019 polls helped campaign for the party's 5 senatorial candidates, party president and senatorial bet Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel III told ANC's Early Edition.
"What is important is the concept of service to the party," he said.
"We want people to be in the party because they want to serve the party, not because they want to be identified with the party waiting for whatever imagined benefits identification would bring them."
The party would base its members' performance in their ability to deliver votes for PDP-Laban senatorial bets Dong Mangudadatu, Ronald "Bato" Dela Rosa, Bong Go, Francis Tolentino and Pimentel.
"It will show in the election results in their area if they helped the national slate," Pimentel said.
All PDP-Laban candidates are endorsed by two pro-administration rosters which are headed by Duterte and his daughter, Davao City Mayor and Hugpong ng Pagbabago chair Sara Duterte-Carpio.
"The PDP-Laban candidates are enjoying the best of all worlds because we are included in the president's expanded slate and we are also all in the HNP senatorial ticket," Pimentel said.
Despite being the dominant party in this year's elections, only three out of the 5 PDP-Laban candidates have a statistical chance of winning the midterm polls, according to Pulse Asia's April 10-14 survey.
Go, Dela Rosa and Pimentel placed between the fourth and 14th slots, while Tolentino and Mangudadatu ranked 15th and 19th respectively.
