MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday said he will fire another government official, following a string of resignations in his Cabinet due to allegations of corruption and other issues.
“There’s another one coming up,” Duterte said in a speech in Malacañang.
Duterte has fired several officials due to allegations of corruption. He is particularly irked by officials who go on unnecessary trips abroad.
“You know, if you go to other places to attend important meetings that would affect the country, I would appreciate it,” he said.
The President usually mentions in his speeches that he has fired or will fire some government officials due to corruption, but he does not mention their names.
The latest to leave his Cabinet is Tourism Secretary Wanda Tulfo-Teo, who resigned Tuesday following a P60-million advertisement scandal involving the Department of Tourism (DOT) and state-run PTV-4, wherein ads were placed in a program produced by her brother Ben Tulfo's media firm.
Duterte’s statement also comes amid a controversy in state-run PhilHealth, whose interim president Celestina Ma. Jude Dela Serna is being criticized for her supposedly excessive expenses on trips and hotel accommodations.
The President also said he is saddened that some of those he fired were the same people who had urged him to run for president in 2016.
“I’m very sad that they are the very first to go,” he said. “There is no way of telling if those close to you are like that.”
