MANILA – Zamboanga City will set up isolation facilities for inmates who will be released amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Mayor Beng Climaco said Thursday.
Speaking to ANC, Climaco said the inmates would be placed in isolation facilities in the city’s special economic zone and free port.
To decongest jails amid the threat of COVID-19, the Supreme Court in April issued guidelines to free inmates with lapsed jail time and those whose cases are facing delays due to the absence of essential witnesses.
To date, Zamboanga City has recorded 60 patients with COVID-19, 46 came from the city’s reformatory center.
The tally includes 4 recoveries and 3 fatalities. The city government is also monitoring 487 suspected COVID-19 cases.
Climaco also thanked President Rodrigo Duterte for extending the enhanced community quarantine in the city until May 15 as COVID-19 cases were still being recorded.
The mayor also revealed the city had identified 3 COVID-19 testing centers, which would include the Zamboanga City Medical Center.
