Authorities have ordered an immediate creation of a special investigation task force to probe the death of radio reporter Cornelio Pepino on Tuesday night in the town of Sibulan in Negros Oriental.

"We want to assure everyone, including the family and the media, that we will investigate this," Philippine National Police (PNP) Region 7 Director Police Brig. Gen. Ignatius Ferro said in a press conference.

The task group will be composed of the Sibulan and Dumaguete police, the PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) and intelligence personnel.

Pepino, also known as Rex Cornelio, was gunned down by unidentified men on a motorcycle in Boloc-boloc, Sibulan on Tuesday.

He was with his wife onboard their motorcycle from Dumaguete City when the incident happened.

Ferro said they are looking into possible work-related or personal motives in the crime.

Pepino sustained multiple gunshot wounds while his wife survived the attack and is now in stable condition.

Pepino is the third journalist to be killed in Negros Oriental. In May 2018, radio blocktimer Edmund Sestoso was also killed. November, the following year, radio anchor Dindo Generosa was also gunned down.
