LAPU-LAPU, Cebu - A pregnant woman in this city wept as she hugged and welcomed back her 9-year-old son who survived COVID-19, less than a week before Mother's Day.

The 29-year-old mother said her child, live-in partner and their other 7-year-old son caught the virus last month in a residential compound in Barangay Gun-ob, the epicenter of the city's outbreak.

Both boys told their mother, who is 8 months pregnant, that they would work at getting better so their family could soon go on a swimming trip, she said.

"I realized I just have to pray because stress might decrease my resistance to the virus," she said.

Her eldest son was discharged from the hospital on Monday. Health workers who brought him home applauded as his mother embraced him.

The boy's sibling and father, both asymptomatic, are still at a private hospital waiting to test negative for the novel coronavirus.

The Lapu-Lapu City government shouldered majority of the family's hospital bills, which depleted the P10,000 they had been saving for the mother's maternity expenses, she said.

City workers welcome back COVID-19 survivors with cheers in their community to erode stigma against patients, said Nagiel Bañacia, head of the Lapu-Lapu Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.

Frontliners over the weekend sent off a 7-year-old COVID-19 survivor out of the hospital with applause and a salute.
