LAPU-LAPU, Cebu - Disaster officials in this city sent home a 7-year-old boy from a hospital with applause and a salute, after he won his battle with COVID-19.

The boy, his mother and 2-year-old sibling all caught the respiratory disease from the children's grandmother who shared their family compound in Barangay Gun-ob, the epicenter of the city's outbreak, said the disaster office.

The 7-year-old child was discharged from the hospital on Sunday night. His relatives will take care of him while his mother and sibling remained at the hospital, said Nagiel Bañacia Bañacia head of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

"He is the hero because he survived the battle against COVID. Welcoming him back to the community is part of the total healing," said Banacia.

Three relatives of the boy earlier recovered from COVID-19. The child's father lives in a neighboring island, he said.

Lapu-Lapu has recorded 34 COVID-19 cases, with 8 recoveries.
