ZAMBOANGA CITY—Islam's holy month of Ramadan will begin on Monday, May 6, the Grand Mufti of Zamboanga Peninsula and Palawan announced Saturday.
Ramadan, one of the five pillars of Islam, is a period of reflection and self-restraint that aims to bring Muslims closer to Allah.
Muslims around the world will practice the abstention from earthly distractions such as sexual activity, vice, food and water, among others in the daytime.
Sheikh Abdulwakil Tanjilil, deputy Mufti for Region 9 and Palawan, said that in line with the Ramadan, he wishes for the upcoming elections to be peaceful and that candidates fear God.
"Kasi sila magiging leader natin, they should be (a) righteous man," he said. — With a report from Leizle Lacastesantos, ABS-CBN News
