NPA rebels attack police sub-station in Cagayan

Around 30 communist New People's Army (NPA) rebels attacked a police sub-station in Amulung town, Cagayan province on Thursday, police said.

The armed men took away four M-16s and two PNP-issued 9mm pistols. The armed men also torched a Mahindra patrol vehicle before fleeing.

Police, meanwhile, announced the arrest of the region's most wanted person and highest ranking official of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People's Army (CPP-NPA) in Penablanca, Cagayan province.

Police and soldiers from the Intelligence Support Unit, 5th ID of the Armed Forces of the Philippines arrested David Soriano, Regional Secretary, Komiteng Rehiyon ng Hilagang Silangan ng Luzon, in Barangay Camasi, Penablanca on Thursday afternoon.

He is accused of being one of the masterminds in the ambush of police in Baggao in February 2016. At least six policemen were killed while 10 others were wounded in the incident. 

Soriano is also the principal suspect in the murder of Gonzaga, Cagayan Mayor Carlito Pentecostes, Jr, in 2015, police said.
