MANILA - The Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) has recommended the extension of the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) in Albay province and Zamboanga City, presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said Saturday.

“Nairekomenda ng IATF na ang probinsiya ng Albay at siyudad ng Zamboanga ay manatili under ECQ,” he said during a Laging Handa public briefing.

(The IATF has recommended that Albay province and Zamboanga City shall remain under ECQ.)

The task force’s recommendation of continuing strict lockdown measures in both areas has been sent to President Rodrigo Duterte for approval, Roque said.

This after the ECQ was extended only in Metro Manila and 8 other areas until May 15 as studies showed these places were at high-risk of a coronavirus outbreak.

The rest of the country, including Albay province and Zamboanga City, shifted to the general community quarantine, with looser lockdown restrictions.

Earlier, local officials in the two areas requested continued enforcement of the strict lockdown there as cases of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) were still being reported.

Of 39 cases in Bicol, 12 are from Legazpi City in Albay, the highest of any city in the region, as of Friday.

Zamboanga City's local officials earlier decided to continue enforcing the ECQ in the city until May 15, with 11 total reported cases there as of Friday.

But the IATF still needs to approve local officials' moves to impost, extend or lift ECQ guidelines.
