MANILA -- The University of the Philippines soared in a London-based publication's ranking of the top schools in Asia.
It was UP's first time to crack the top 100 of Times Higher Education's list and one of only 5 Southeast Asian universities in the top 100. Singapore and Malaysia had 2 each.
The Philippines' premiere state university was at 95th place, up 61 places from 156th in 2018. UP has been on the list since 2017.
With an overall score of 38.1 points, UP remained the highest ranked university from the Philippines. De La Salle University placed 251st to 300th with a score of 20.7 to 23.8.
The list was topped by Tsinghua University in China with 83.1 points followed by the National University of Singapore with 81.5 points.
Completing the top 5 were the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the University of Hong Kong and China's Peking University.
The Asia University Rankings use the same indicators as the World University Rankings, though “recalibrated to reflect the priorities of Asian institutions,” and gauge the performance of research-intensive universities across the region, said UP.
THE's data and benchmarking tools "are used by many of the world’s most prestigious universities to help them achieve their strategic goals," said the publication.
