MANILA - Senator Imee Marcos said Wednesday she is proposing to include media personnel among frontliners who should receive a special risk pay during the coronavirus crisis.
Marcos said journalists play an important role during the crisis given the proliferation of false information.
"May panukala din ako na yung media, sana isama din sa frontliner at makakuha din ng special risk payment," she said in a virtual press briefing.
(I have a proposal to include the media among the frontliners so they can receive a special risk payment, too.)
"Sa panahon ng fake news, sa panahon ng napakagulo at umiiral na chismis, eh talagang napaka-importante ng responsible media," she added.
(In the time of fake news, and with circulating rumors, the role of responsible media is very important.)
President Rodrigo Duterte had authorized the grant of hazard pay to government workers who continue to physically report for work despite the crisis.
He also ordered the payment of a one-time special risk allowance for public health workers on the frontlines in the battle against COVID-19.
The Philippines has logged 7,958 COVID-19 cases, as of April 28, including 975 recoveries and 530 fatalities.
