MANILA – The fecal coliform level at Boracay's Bolabog beach has "worsened," an interior official said Thursday, the first day of the island's 6-month shutdown.
Fecal coliform levels on the area are above limit, said Interior Assistant Secretary Epimaco Densing. At least 10 local officials will face administrative charges over the pollution problem on the island, he said separately on Wednesday.
Coliform bacteria are usually found in human and animal waste or from decaying organisms.
"What is worrying us is based on the task force meeting yesterday, the fecal coliform content in the Bolabog beach has worsened," Densing told ANC.
Densing said the cleanup was going smoothly on its first day.
