BAGUIO CITY - A local mixed martial arts athlete was killed in a vehicular accident here Wednesday morning.

Lucky "Furious" Mateo was a rising star in MMA, having been an undefeated fighter since playing the sport in 2013.

Mateo and his cousin Stephen Villanaga were on their way home riding separate motorcycles Wednesday morning.

"Mabilis ang takbo niya, may road construction, hindi niya nakita, tumambling iyong motor niya. Ayun, suka na siya nang suka ng dugo," Villanaga said.

Villanaga rushed his cousin to the Baguio General Hospital where doctors tried to revive him but to no avail. Mateo died due to head trauma.

"Bakit kasi ganoon iyong kalsada. Hindi pa nila tinapos, kaya siya naaksidente eh," his mother Lordes Mateo said.

The road construction at Barangay Lualhati here is a Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) project. Project engineer Margarita Balcita said workers installed enough warning signs to ensure the safety of motorists.

"Doon pa lang sa bungad, may nakalagay doon na 'Construction Ongoing 100 meters away'. Tapos doon sa entrada, may nakalagay na 'No Entry'," Balcita said.

The DPWH is set to conduct further investigation and assured the public that more warning signs would be installed on sites of their road projects.
