MANILA - A magnitude 3.7 aftershock struck Eastern Samar Wednesday afternoon, less than 27 hours after the 6.5-magnitude temblor that rattled parts of Visayas.

The tremor happened at 4:26 p.m., 16 kilometers northwest of San Julian town, epicenter of Tuesday's powerful temblor.

It was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 58 kilometers, according to Phivolcs.

Instrumental Intensity II was reported in Borongan, Eastern Samar.

The tremor was not expected to cause damage and aftershocks.

The temblor was the 23rd aftershock recorded following the 6.5 magnitude quake.

The Visayas quake followed the 6.1 magnitude temblor in Luzon, which left at least 16 people dead and dozens injured.

The Luzon and Visayas earthquakes were not related but have both spawned aftershocks, Phivolcs said.
