MANILA - Ilocos Norte Governor Matthew Manotoc on Wednesday denied reports that 5 people have died in a hospital in the province because of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

In a statement posted on Facebook, Manotoc said the management of Governor Roque B. Ablan Sr. Memorial Hospital (GRBASMH) earlier reported that a 77-year-old patient, who was diagnosed with pneumonia, was admitted at the hospital on April 11.

The patient, with her COVID-19 test result still pending, was later transferred to the Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital and Medical Center (MMMH&MC) due to her deteriorating condition. She was also categorized as COVID-19 suspect.

Reports that 5 other patients who shared the ward with the suspected COVID-19 case died later started circulating in the province.

Manotoc said such reports are erroneous. There were only three deaths, one due to aneurysm, and two others due to acute respiratory failure.

Manotoc also said 2 suspected COVID-19 cases admitted at MMMH&MC tested negative and have been discharged.

As of Wednesday, the country has a total of 6,710 confirmed COVID-19 cases, with 446 deaths and 693 recoveries. - with a report from Dianne Dy, ABS-CBN News
