MANILA- Malacañang on Tuesday called for unity and humanitarianism after a 6.5-magnitude earthquake hit Eastern Samar.

Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo urged local government officials in Visayas to join hands in response to the tremor.

“We call on all local government executives to be on standby. Let us set aside politics for the time being and let the true spirit of unity, cooperation and humanitarianism prevail,” Panelo said in a statement.

The Visayas earthquake struck less than 24 hours after a 6.1-magnitude temblor shook Zambales.

The earthquake’s epicenter was traced to San Julian, Eastern Samar, Phivolcs said in an advisory.

The earthquake, which struck at 1:37 p.m. and has a depth of 63 kilometers, was reportedly felt in different areas of the Visayas, Caraga and Bicol regions. It was initially reported as a 6.2-magnitude earthquake.

The Palace official also assured Filipinos that the government is prepared to respond to the needs of the people.

“We assure our people that the government is on top of the situation and we are ready to respond anywhere and anytime in light of another strong earthquake that hit Eastern Samar this afternoon,” he said.

“Concerned disaster agencies of the government, including those involved in the provision of basic and health services, are now working round the clock to ensure government service delivery remains unhampered,” he added.
