MANILA - House Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo said Monday she respects President Rodrigo Duterte’s decision to veto items worth over P95-billion in the 2019 national budget.
“He is the president. It’s his prerogative. We respect his prerogative,” Arroyo told reporters after the Boao Forum in Taguig City.
Senate President Vicente Sotto III previously said the vetoed items include P75 billion in alleged "insertions" by congressmen, which earlier caused an impasse in the approval of the P3.7-trillion national budget.
The President’s signing of the bill ended an almost four-month delay that threatened the growth of the economy and affected some government services and projects.
Prior to the signing of the budget, the government had operated on a reenacted 2018 budget since January.
