MANILA - The Department of Education on Monday said it is negotiating with the Commission on Elections to raise the honoraria for teachers who will serve in the electoral board.

Under the law, the honararia amounts to P6,000 for the chairperson of the electoral board; P5,000 for each board member; P4,000 for every DepEd supervisor and P2,000 for support staff. All of them are also entitled to P1,000 in travel allowance.

"The law provides we can review these rates," Education Undersecretary Alain Del Pascua told reporters.

Service in the electoral board is mandatory for teachers. Some, however, had difficulty getting their honoraria during previous polls.

"The honoraria should be given within 15 days according to the law. The best person to ask is the Comelec, they have to answer this." noted Pascua.
