An inmate in the Cebu City Jail male dorm who died Saturday later tested positive for the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), city mayor Edgardo Labella said Monday.

The inmate was admitted at a hospital last Saturday due to difficulty in breathing.

While waiting for his test results on Sunday morning, the 49-year old inmate died.

Results that came out Sunday afternoon showed that he was positive for COVID-19. Authorities have yet to say if he had any pre-existing health conditions.

Because of the incident, Labella ordered mass testing immediately inside the jail.

Out of 199 initially tested, another one tested positive. He is now isolated in the jail's new unused building.

The mayor also barred visitors in the facility as they investigate how the inmate contracted the virus.
