PALAWAN — Law-enforcement units here are now on heightened alert after receiving information that the Abu Sayyaf might target the province.

A joint security force in Coron composed of personnel from the Philippine Navy, the Philippine Coast Guard, the Philippine Air Force and the national police has been activated, while sea, air and land assets have been deployed to patrol possible entry points by terrorists.

Intelligence units have also been alerted to verify information regarding the terrorists.

Despite information that the Abu Sayyaf is headed here, the military's Western Command maintains the terror group hasn't been sighted in the area yet.

In a statement released by Coron officials, they assured residents that authorities are on full alert. They also told residents and tourists to remain vigilant and report suspicious individuals and activities.

Authorities also assured the public that Coron is safe and that the government is on top of the situation.

Some tourism stakeholders voiced their fears that an Abu Sayyaf threat might affect their industry, but the provincial government assured them that there is no need to worry because authorities are ready for any incident.
