The ANC Brief
April 19, 2018

Here’s what you need to know today:

A President and the world

President Duterte launched attack on Australian nun Patricia Fox, saying he ordered the BI to investigate her for “disorderly conduct.” He also said foreigners who meddle in the country’s affairs are violating the country’s sovereignty and that foreign critics will be arrested if they enter the country secretly. He added that its he who decides who goes in and out of the country, who gets to be deported and that only “good” people should be allowed entry. Even before the President said these things, Presidential spokesman Harry Roque was quoted as saying the detention of Fox may have been a mistake. Roque will be guest on Headstart so expect a clarification on this.

The President is due in Camp Crame at 2 p.m. for the retirement ceremony of outgoing PNP Chief Dir. Gen. Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa and the turnover to incoming PNP Chief Dir. Oscar Albayalde. ANC will air the event live.

Dispassion over an intrusion?

National Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon said China’s landing of military planes on the Philippine-claimed Mischief Reef was not a threat, but it’s still a concern. ANC will explore the issue with interviews from experts on our newscasts.

Protest in paradise

Various groups will hold a caravan against the closure of Boracay island. An estimated 30,000 workers in establishments on the island are expected to lose their jobs. ANC will provide updates on the protest.

Separation anxiety

President Duterte also said he could not support the push of House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez for a divorce bill. What’s the reaction of Alvarez? Will it weaken the ties between the President and his loyal ally Alvarez as well as the Speaker’s position in the House? A few weeks ago, talk was rife Alvarez would lose his lofty House position.

Lack of impetus

In the PSEI, analysts agree Philippine shares will likely trade sideways with a downward bias due to a lack of any catalyst whether local or global. ANC’s business group will keep an eye on the PSEi as well as the overnight US markets. The EU’s top trade official also said US-imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum are distorting global trade and affecting economic growth.

Others:

-    Grab Country Head Brian Cu admitted that they did not inform its riders when it implemented a P2 per minute travel charge.

-    The DOLE will hold a presscon at 11 am on preparations for Labor Day. But expect the issue of “endo” to crop up.
