ILIGAN CITY – Unidentified assailants shot and killed a police officer in Barangay Del Carmen early Thursday morning.
The fatality was identified as SPO4 Junas Balbutin, 56, who was reportedly jogging in Zone 4 when motorcycle-riding gunmen came and shot him several times.
Initial investigation showed Balbutin was able to run a few meters away from where he was first shot and cautioned other joggers of the attack. But the armed men fired at him again and left him for dead.
The gunmen were able to escape quickly but police are hoping footage from a nearby resident's CCTV will be able to help them identify the culprits.
City police chief Senior Inspector Felix Rabago, Jr. said Balbutin was unarmed at the time of the assault. He said the victim had earlier applied for early retirement.
Residents said Balbutin took the same path for his morning jog and may have already been under surveillance by the killers for quite some time.
"He doesn’t have threats that we know about,” Rabago added.
The attack on Balbutin is the second shooting incident in the city after the election gun ban was implemented.
