MANILA--Steps are being taken to ensure the safety of inmates at correctional facilities amid the spread of COVID-19, Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles said on Saturday.
Nograles said the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) and the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) have prepared isolation facilities for inmates showing symptoms.
"Bawat BJMP facility merong prepared isolation facility. If ever may indications, symptoms alam ng BJMP personnel kung ano gagawin. Isolate agad. BuCor ganu'n din," Nograles said.
On Friday, the BJMP reported that 18 inmates and personnel have tested positive for the highly contagious virus. They have since been isolated and receiving treatment.
BJMP medical chief Dr. John Paul Borlongan also made an appeal to the national government and the public on Friday for supplies of personal protective equipment.
Nograles said the BuCor has prepared areas within its facilities where it can immediately isolate suspected and probable COVID-19 inmates.
"Mas madali actually ang management ng BuCor kasi mas malaki at mas malawak ang space nila. So nakahanda na po lahat," said Nograles.
