Leyte has recorded its first case of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), health officials said Friday.
This is also the fifth case of COVID-19 in Eastern Visayas.
In a statement, the Department of Health's (DOH) office in Eastern Visayas identified the patient as a 58-year-old woman from Burauen town, Leyte.
DOH Eastern Visayas said the patient traveled from Guam to Metro Manila in February. Then she went home to Burauen using her own car along with 16 of her relatives and friends.
The patient said that she finished the mandatory 14-day quarantine. But shortly after, she had a sore throat, so she went to the rural health center in Burauen for a check-up.
She also showed other symptoms of the coronavirus.
On April 13, she underwent swab tests and was only confirmed infected with the virus on Thursday.
The health department in the region said they are already conducting contact tracing to find others she possibly infected.
Eastern Visayas earlier logged its first 4 cases of COVID-19 from different towns in Samar.
