MANILA — Former Finance Secretary and Prime Minister Cesar Virata has been discharged after treatment for COVID-19 and related complications, his daughter confirmed Wednesday.

“Dad is home. Thank you for the prayers and well wishes that helped bring him back, “ Gillian Virata said in a Facebook post. She also thanked the doctors, nurses and other frontliners who helped in her dad's recovery.

Speaking to ABS-CBN News, she said they brought their father to the hospital after a mild stroke more than 2 weeks ago. "Thereafter he tested positive for COVID-19," she said.

“April 5, he was taken off the ventilator and was able to talk with my mom. God is good,” she added.

She said her father underwent three confirmatory tests that he was already COVID-19 negative before he was discharged.

In his statement to ABS-CBN News, the older Virata expressed gratitude for his healing.

“I thank all those who helped and prayed. Follow instructions for safety," he said.

Virata is married to theater icon, Joy Gamboa Virata.

At 89 years old, Virata is considered one of the oldest COVID-19 positive patients who recovered from the disease, his daughter said.
