MANILA - The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Wednesday said 5 more of its personnel have contracted the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), bringing the total infections in the police force to 55.
Latest records from the PNP Health Service showed that the new patients were 2 policemen from Laguna, aged 36 and 43; a 29-year-old policeman from Muntinlupa City; a 29-year-old policeman from Taguig City; and a 50-year-old policeman from Bulacan.
The highly-contagious disease has so far killed 3 members of the PNP while 8 have recovered.
In a statement, PNPHS director Police Brig. Gen. Herminio Tadeo Jr. said they were also monitoring 105 probable coronavirus carriers, including 20 commissioned officers, 84 non-commissioned officers and 1 non-uniformed personnel.
Some 456 PNP members are also under observation for suspicion of having caught the virus. The number includes 99 commissioned officers, 320 non-commissioned officers and 37 non-uniformed personnel.
Police officers are among personnel who continue to report for work under the lockdown as they serve as frontliners in enforcing quarantine guidelines.
To date, the number of coronavirus infections in the Philippines is at 5,453. The tally includes 349 people who succumbed to COVID-19 while 353 have recovered.
