OSLOB, Cebu - Around 50 teachers and students based in Oslob, Cebu volunteered to join the ongoing rehabilitation of Sumilon Island.
The dive site and sandbar were declared closed by the local government to make way for the clean-up and rehabilitation.
On Thursday, they also included cleaning the shores of the only resort on the island.
In the 3 days dedicated to cleaning, they collected almost 3 tons of trash.
Today is the last day of the clean-up, but the dive site and sandbar will remain closed until Monday next week, said Mayor Jose Tumulak.
"Mopahuway lang sa ang isla for three days sa pagkakaron," Tumulak said.
(The island will rest for three days, for now.)
On Monday, Tumulak and his team will go back to assess the island before they open it again on Tuesday.
A meeting with stakeholders will also be held to float the idea of closing the island for a week every quarter.
The only resort on the island said its bookings have not been affected by the rehabilitation, but some clients are asking why they can't access the sandbar.
Based on the decision of the mayor, they may only use the beach on the side of the island.
