DAVAO ORIENTAL - Local authorities seized some P250 million worth of exotic animals in Mati City, Davao Oriental Monday night.

The animals, which included black palm cockatoos, lizards, and wallabies, came from Indonesia.

Dr. Rogelio Demelletes Jr., senior ecosystems management specialist of Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), said they acted on a tip that animals were smuggled into the country from Indonesia.

"We already received a news na ang Mati ay isa sa mga pinagbabagsakan ng mga ibon na galing sa Indonesia," he said.

The exotic species, which are popular among animal collectors, could fetch prices up to P300,000.

Two men who kept the animals in Barangay Dahican were arrested and will be charged with illegally transporting wildlife.

Under Republic Act 9147 or the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act, they could face up 6 months in jail and a P100,000 fine.

Demelletes said the animals will be screened if they carry any disease. - Report from Chrislen Bulosan, ABS-CBN News
