MANILA - State weather bureau PAGASA on Sunday said it may declare the start of the summer season this week as the cool northeast monsoon or amihan is forecast to stop prevailing in Luzon.

"Nakita po namin na hindi na babalik si amihan at magdedeklara na po tayo ng tag-init ngayong linggo," PAGASA meteorologist Aldczar Aurelio told DZMM.

(We saw that the amihan will no longer return and we will declare the start of summer this week.)

The amihan is currently bringing cloudy skies and scattered rains in the regions of Cagayan Valley, Cordillera, Bicol, Ilocos, and Central Luzon, the office said.

PAGASA last year announced the start of summer season on April 5. The office made the same announcement in March for 2012 to 2016.

The effect of the amihan may have been prolonged this year by a "weak" La Niña condition characterized by the unusually cool ocean surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific.

After the onset of summer, the dominant weather systems will be the easterlies or warm winds from the Pacific, together with the ridge of high pressure area, said Aurelio.
