MANILA - A group of young Muslim professionals in western Mindanao is raising funds for medical frontliners in the island provinces of Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi to help them in the fight against the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
The group has launched an online fundraising effort through the gogetfunding website, according to Zamboanga-based Dr. Abdul Javar Esturco, the group's spokesperson.
According to Esturco, they will be supporting frontliners in these areas because the lockdown and suspension of public transportation have made it more difficult to get medical supplies, personal protective equipment, and even medicines to these island provinces.
"Because they are so far from the center, our health workers in these areas face logistical and supply difficulties," he said.
Esturco also said the group aims to initially produce 150 PPEs that will be distributed to the three provinces. They will be producing more should they receive more funds.
They have raised P70,000 over the last three days.
