MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte has signed a law marking January 23 of every year as “First Philippine Republic Day,” declaring the occasion a special working holiday.

Duterte signed on April 5 Republic Act No. 11014 to mark January 23 of every year as a special working holiday in commemoration of the establishment of the First Philippine Republic on January 23, 1899 at the Barasoain Church in Malolos City, Bulacan.

“The National Historical Commission, in coordination with the Department of Education, shall implement activities for the ‘First Philippine Republic Day’ and ensure that the significance of this historical event will continue to inspire and instill a sense of pride for the rich and noble history of the Filipino nation,” the law reads.

The first Philippine Republic, also referred to as the Malolos Republic, was established under the Philippines’ first president, Emilio Aguinaldo. It was dissolved two years after, following the capture of Aguinaldo by American troops.
