MANILA - President Duterte has designated Undersecretary Catalino Cuy as officer-in-charge of the Department of the Interior and Local Government, according to Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella.

Cuy served as DILG undersecretary for police matters, and as former Davao City police chief prior to his appointment.

Abella said Cuy's appointment is effective immediately.

"Usec Cuy will hold the position to ensure the continuous and effective delivery of services of the Department until the President appoints a new Secretary," Abella said in a text message.

In 2010, Cuy was among 26 Davao City cops ordered suspended by the Ombudsman for failing to solve summary executions in Davao.

Cuy succeeds former DILG Secretary Ismael Sueno, who was fired by Duterte over corruption allegations.

DILG undersecretaries John Castriciones, Jesus Hinlo, and Emilie Padilla reportedly called on Duterte to remove Sueno, whom they accused of collecting grease money from illegal gambling rings through his grandson, a police official identified only as "Senior Supt. Sintin."

Sueno has denied the allegations.
