MANILA (UPDATE)- President Rodrigo Duterte on Friday night lashed out at human rights lawyer Chel Diokno for allegedly criticizing the government's response to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and encouraging people to defy the lockdown.

In a public address, the President unleashed a torrent of insults against the former senatorial candidate.

"Letche ka, galit ako sa'yo, ulol ka," Duterte said.

In his rambling remarks, the President said Diokno was among "lousy lawyers" who are allegedly encouraging people to violate the law.

Duterte also mocked Diokno's loss in the 2019 midterm elections.

"Problema sa'yo, 'pag nagsalita ka, ang laki ng ngipin mo kaya na-discourage ang mga tao," he said.

(Your problem is, when you speak, your teeth are too big that's why people were discouraged.)

"Pag magkita tayo, patalsikin ko isang ngipin mo."

(When we meet, I'll remove a tooth from you.)

On Thursday, Diokno revealed that the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has summoned social media users who expressed sentiments on the government's response to the pandemic.

The human rights lawyer said NBI's actions will bring a chilling effect since his client, who was summoned to explain, did not post misinformation but "fair commentary on matters of public interest."

On his official social media accounts, Diokno has called for mass testing for the novel coronavirus and cautioned the public on the use of the P275-billion government budget to fight the crisis.
