MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday advised prosecutors to arm themselves amid killings of government lawyers during his administration.
In a speech in Puerto Princesa City, Duterte told prosecutors to get Glock 19 pistols, which he said don't jam and are maintenance-free.
"I advise you to get, 'wag kayong kumuha ng .45, it’s too heavy. Go for the Glock 19. Ang Glock hindi talaga nagja-jam yan. I’m not advertising the Glock, but it’s a fact. That’s why we bought it for my policemen. And maintenance-free, hindi magkakalawang 'yan," Duterte said in the annual convention of the Prosecutor’s League of the Philippines.
Duterte, a former prosecutor, said he also carries a gun.
"May baril talaga ako, I cannot go out without a gun. Hindi ako kumportable, para akong nakahubad," he said.
Eight prosecutors have been killed since August 2016, data from the Department of Justice and the National Prosecution Service showed.
The President said authorities are fast-tracking investigations into the killings of state prosecutors.
"The assassination of prosecutors across the country have highlighted the danger that prosecutors and their respective families endure. Rest assured that our law enforcement agencies are expediting investigation of these assassination cases," he said.
"I also encourage the leadership of the Prosecutor’s League to work with the Philippine National Police, National Bureau of Investigation and other relevant agencies to come up with solutions on how to better protect our prosecutors and their families."
