Total cases of COVID-19 in Western Mindanao now at 6

The region of Western Mindanao recorded two more cases of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on Wednesday, including a minor and a confirmed local transmission.

Dr. Emilia Monicimpo, director of the Department of Health in the region, said one of the new patients is a 7-year-old boy from Dumalinao town, Zamboanga del Sur.

On March 14, the boy's family traveled to Iligan City, where there are at least 2 cases of COVID-19. A week later the boy started showing symptoms such as fever and cough.

On March 23, he was admitted in a local hospital and a swab sample was taken from him. Two days after, he was discharged by attending physicians as he recovered from the symptoms.

It took a week before the local health office received the positive result of the swab test from the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) in Muntinlupa City.

Monicimpo said the parents of the boy and his immediate family who had close contact with the patient, will be in quarantine starting Wednesday, although almost all family members are asymptomatic.

The boy is the third confirmed case of COVID-19 in Zamboanga del Sur.

Meanwhile, the other new case of COVID-19 in the region is a 30-year-old woman from Zamboanga City.

She had no travel history in areas where there have been confirmed cases of the disease.

Dr. Dulce Amor Miravite of the Zamboanga City health office said the patient got COVID-19 through local transmission, as she might have been exposed to people who had travel history in Metro Manila, a hotspot of the disease.

With the two new patients, the total COVID-19 cases in Western Mindanao climb to 6. Zamboanga City and Zamboanga del Sur have 3 cases each.
