ILOCOS SUR – New People’s Army (NPA) rebels belonging to the SPP Sandino group operating in the town of Santa Cruz detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) along a road in Barangay Calaoan Tuesday, a day before the founding anniversary of the group, the Army's 81st Infantry Battalion said Wednesday.

The IED targeted the troops of the 81st IB on board a military vehicle on their way to the battalion headquarters which located just two kilometers away from the blast site.

The IED blast did not cause any physical injury.

However, one teenager on board a motorcycle was reportedly traumatized after witnessing the blast. He was unhurt.

“Mabuti na lamang at nakalagpas na an gating vehicle 20 meters away bago pa nila ma-detonate,” Lt. Col. Eugenio Julio Osias IV said.
